May’s photo book of the month is actually a DVD rather than a book(!). This is largely because Saul Leiter books are very collectable and many are pretty much unaffordable! I bought this DVD last year, and for me it’s just as inspiring as the best photo books in my own collection.
The mantra for my workshop organisation Walking Photographer Tours is “See Things Different”; Saul Leiter’s photography epitomises this.
In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter is a documentary that follows celebrated photographer Saul Leiter around his New York studio as well as his photo walks around the surrounding streets. It is full of great quotes, amusing anecdotes, insightful reflections, inspiring observations and some really original photography. Whatever kind of photography you’re into, I thoroughly recommend watching this.
